Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, less than five millimeters in diameter, that have become a ubiquitous pollutant in our environment. Originated from the breakdown of larger plastic debris or manufactured as microbeads in personal care products, these particles have infiltrated the most remote corners of the planet, from the depths of the Mariana Trench to the peaks of Mount Everest. The primary concern regarding microplastics is their persistence; they do not biodegrade but rather fragment into smaller pieces, making them easily ingestible by marine life. This ingestion introduces plastics into the food chain, eventually reaching humans. While the long-term health effects on humans remain under investigation, preliminary studies suggest potential risks including hormonal disruption and cellular damage. Furthermore, microplastics act as vectors for other pollutants, absorbing harmful chemicals from the surrounding water and releasing them upon ingestion.
